The Amador County Arts Council encourages the community to attend the countywide Poetry Out Loud (POL) Recitation Competition on January 28th, 2024. Join us at 2:00 PM in the Historic Sutter Creek School House as we watch High School Students compete for a spot to represent Amador County at the Statewide POL Competition. The winner will be one step closer to the grand prize of $20,000. POL is a national competition and curriculum that teaches literature, public speaking, text analysis, and memorization skills. Since 2016, we have helped students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

Students will recite poems chosen from the POL Anthology available at poetryoutloud.org and the winner will compete at the statewide competition in Sacramento on March 16th, 2024. The county winner will receive a plethora of prizes from the Amador County Arts Council including a specialized POL sweatshirt with the word “CHAMPION” on the arm, multiple newspaper articles, and a photoshoot with a local, rural, professional photographer. The POL Competition will also feature a recitation of the winning poem from the Kat Everitt Original Poem Competition and voting from the public for the winning Original POL logo. No matter your age, you have a place at POL because poetry is the voice of the people and we are all ageless. Creative thinking is central to the human experience and we all have the right to learn about and experience poetry.

Lily Fawver, Amador County 2023 POL winner, said “I believe my participation in this competition has shaped me as a performing artist, as it does for many aspiring poets. Poetry is such a subtly powerful art that really compels you to look inside yourself to recite it fully.” To learn more about POL visit our website or email to info@amadorarts.org, or text/call (209)256-8166.
