Q&A with Scholarship Recipient Claire Tearpak

Q: What specific degree or program will you be pursuing, and how does it align with your passion for the arts?

A: I am majoring in Geology with a minor in Studio Arts. I’m extremely passionate about the environment, which is generally reflected in my art, so it made sense to pursue both Geology and Fine Arts.

Q: How do you see your education contributing to your growth as an artist and individual?

A: Moving to a new city has been incredibly inspiring, and I believe Flagstaff and Northern Arizona University have a lot to offer me artistically. While I haven’t experienced the art department personally yet, I sense that the environment is encouraging towards growth and focuses on a creative community.

Q: Can you tell us about your journey as an artist? What arts do you practice, and how did you start?

A: I began taking art lessons in early elementary school, which sparked my love for creating. I continued practicing through high school, discovering the mediums that interest me. Watercolor has always been my favorite because of its convenience and malleability, but recently, I’ve enjoyed line work using ink pen. Over time, I developed a style that feels like a true reflection of me as an artist.

Q: What challenges have you faced in balancing your artistic pursuits with other aspects of life?

A: It’s been difficult to always channel my creativity into traditional art, especially with a busy school schedule. However, I’ve found that I can always turn to art when I need a break from academic life, and that’s been a great balance for me.

Scholarship Recipient Claire Tearpak Amador County

Q: Why do you believe artistic expression is important for young people, especially in a rural community like ours?

A: Artistic expression reveals a lot about a person, and in rural communities, there are so many diverse experiences that often go unnoticed outside of art. Having the ability to create in rural spaces adds so much color and life to the community. Instilling that sense of creativity in young people ensures that this vibrancy will continue.

Q: How do you think the arts can influence or enhance one’s personal and professional life?

A: Expressing creativity helps you better understand yourself and the world, so it can enhance every part of life. Practicing art can give you insight into what you need and may even help you get closer to your personal goals and aspirations.

Q: How will the Amador Arts scholarship support you in achieving your educational and artistic goals?

A: The financial aid from Amador Arts has been a huge help in my college experience and serves as a powerful motivator to keep pursuing art. Knowing you can be rewarded for both academics and creativity is very encouraging and pushes me to keep pursuing both.

Q: What does receiving this scholarship mean to you personally and professionally?

A: I feel incredibly lucky and grateful for the recognition. It’s exciting to stay connected with this amazing organization, and it’s a reminder that doing what you love does pay off. The scholarship represents such a supportive community of people and artists, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Q: What are your aspirations for the future, both in terms of your career and artistic development?

A: I hope to find a way to connect both my passions, geology and art. There are so many inspiring scenes I want to capture, and I’m looking forward to finding more time to continue practicing and step outside of my comfort zone in this new city.

Q: Do you have any specific projects or goals you want to accomplish during your time at college?

A: I’d love to explore the local area and landmarks, as well as get involved with the art program at Northern Arizona University. Staying on top of school work is a priority, but Flagstaff is full of amazing artists that I’d like to meet and learn from.

Q: What advice would you give to young artists who are unsure about pursuing their passion due to practical concerns?

A: While practical concerns are important, they can also feel limiting. My advice is to continue following your passion and see what opportunities arise—something is sure to come your way.

Q: How can aspiring artists balance the pressures of pursuing a practical career with their artistic passions?

A: Finding a career that still allows you to engage creatively is key. Even if your career isn’t art-based, there are other outlets that will support your creativity.

Q: What can your Arts Council do to support, promote, and help students like you during your college education?

A: Staying connected throughout college is really encouraging. Hearing from the Arts Council and staying updated on what’s happening in the county keeps me motivated, and their commitment to supporting my opportunities is deeply appreciated, even from afar.
