Amador County Art Council brings FREE music and movement to kids aged 5 and under.

August 1, 2023 (Jackson, CA)—Early childhood music and movement is back at First 5 Amador! Thanks to Amador County Arts Council and the Creative Youth Development Grant from the California Arts Council, a state agency. Beginning on August 14th, free Monday classes from 9:30 to 10:30 AM will be offered to children aged 0 to 5 and their caregivers. Classes are centered on music, movement, and imaginative play with optional corresponding weekly activities for family at-home play. Facilitated by Professional Teaching Artist, Laurie Story Vela, the weekly home activities are open to all and accessible leapingliteracy.com.

The Creative Youth Development Grant from the California Arts Council (a state agency at arts.ca.gov) focuses on developing future creative minds by providing arts education to youth aged 5 and under. This $36,000 grant was awarded to Amador County Arts Council in 2023 and provides for movement and music education for kids aged 5 and under, through the end of 2024. According to First 5 Amador Executive Director, Nina Machado, “Making music, especially if it includes movements such as clapping, dancing and tapping, not only engages young children in a fun activity, but it also helps build important skills including communication, large motor skills, and brain and body coordination. We are very appreciative and delighted to partner with the Amador County Arts Council to share this music and movement program with families in our county.” The Creative Youth Development Grant not only provides classes but will supply a tub of instruments and movement props to First 5 Amador in Jackson, as well as each of the First 5 playgroups throughout the county so that music and movement education can continue well beyond the timeline of the grant.
